Johns Hopkins Research Elective

Two pathways to apply-

1. Already decided research faculty (Most departments accept pre-determined preceptor except radiology)

We’ll mainly talk about pathway one. It involves following steps-

STEP 1- Find a preceptor. See video, following links will help to find preceptor-

STEP 2- Email the preceptors- Cover letter with CV
Sample emails-

Dear Professor:

I am Akshee Batra, a 3rd Professional year medical student at Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University, New Delhi, India. I am planning to undertake a Research Elective at University of ABCABC School of Medicine for a period of 4 weeks during the month of December, 20XX.

I have a profound interest in Gastroenterology and wish to pursue my post-graduation studies in this field. Going through articles on PubMed, I got to know about your areas of interest and your extensive research work. Reading your publications, 'Advances in Management of XYZXYZ Diseases.' and 'Elevated Z line: a new sign of ...... on double-contrast......', I am further inclined towards working under your guidance. Having recently read about these topics, I am interested in doing some research in related areas.

I would be honored to have a chance to work under your able guidance. It would be a great learning opportunity for me if given a chance to work with you during the period of my Research Elective.

I am confident and can work autonomously as well as in a team environment. If accepted, I shall mail the appropriate application to the visiting medical student coordinator and shall work out the technicalities.

I shall bear my travel, accommodation and other expenses during the stay. Attached herewith is a copy of my Curriculum Vitae.

I would also like to assist you in your research work by writing case reports, data analysis and compilation of data by working from India after or even before the period of my elective. It would be a wonderful opportunity for me to learn from a person whose work inspired and motivated me.

With your guidance and support, I'm sure that I'll be able to strengthen and compliment my medical education.

Step 3- Contact the coordinator
You have to apply with a formal application along with few required documents about 4-6 months in advance.

Step 4- Send documents and wait for reply.

                           

Elective cost- $500 registration, no tution fee for research elective; Insurance- can buy from outside with same monetary value as Hopkins if elective <9 weeks; The premium for individual health insurance coverage is $330 per month for the 2020-2021 academic year.
